Description

The blade Tyson is launching when the series opens, before the Dragoon bit-beast has awakened. It is a plain four-layer top with the Grip Base's ridged rubber tip, built for aggressive contact but with nothing supernatural behind it. Tyson uses it in his street battles against Carlos and in his first, losing encounter with Kai, and it is the blade the family's dragon spirit finally jumps into from the dojo's sword.

Dragoon Grip Attacker was Tyson Granger's opening top in the anime, shown only briefly in the first episode, while in the manga it stood as his second. Built on the 4 Layer System, it combines the Dragon Head Attack Ring with a six-sided Wide Weight Disk and a Grip Base. Kai destroys it in both versions of the story, and Tyson moves on to Dragoon Storm afterward.

SlotPartWeightSpinNote
Attack Ring Dragon Head 2.6 g Right Only A Right-Spin-only, short-range Attack Ring whose contact points are well-angled but a little flat, generating some recoil; even so, among Four Layer System Attack Rings it's a comparatively strong offensive option since its angling still delivers decent power despite the small size.
Weight Disk Wide 12.7 g A light Weight Disk with average width but a notably more central mass distribution than its Ten Wide/Wide Defense successors — heavier than Eight Wide, but its shape generates concerning recoil relative to that light weight, and its distribution doesn't stand out as ideal for any particular combination.
Blade Base Grip Base 6.9 g Right Only A Right-Spin-only Base that's genuinely fast — extremely so while tornado-stalling, though that burns through its light-weight stamina reserve very quickly — and reasonably easy to flower-pattern. Its short height struggles against Circle Survivor Defense but works better than taller Attack Bases against Compact builds, and it holds onto its aggression fairly well even as the tip wears down.

Weights are single copies weighed on their own; a part can vary by a few tenths of a gram.

In play and in the story

Competitive players treat the Wide Weight Disk as a serviceable piece for endurance and Smash Attack builds, giving extra movement range and speed in an attacking role, though it is generally considered outclassed once the Ten Wide disk becomes available.

  • Issued in a gunmetal recolor as a limited colour release.
  • Issued in a clear recolor with a green Wide Defense piece as a limited colour release.
  • Issued in a clear recolor with a blue Wide Defense piece as a limited colour release.

Community testing, 2010-08-24 — summarised

The competitive view

Dragoon Grip Attacker is valued almost entirely for its Grip Base blade base, described as one of the fastest and most effective attack bases ever made for the plastic generation despite its poor stamina and right-spin-only use.

Dragon Head's four small protrusions are too fragile and small to be used in Smash Attack combos; Grip Base's light frame and speed make it one of the fastest bases available, ideal for both Smash Attack and Upper Attack despite poor spin time and no left-spin compatibility.

Verdict as the draft gives it: Called one of the best attack bases in any system and recommended for serious attack-focused players to own multiples, despite the Beyblade being hard to find; cheaper alternatives named are Storm Grip Base (Dragoon S) and SG Metal Flat 2 (Gaia Dragoon V), though both lack Grip Base's raw power.

  • Attack Ring: Dragon Head, 4 grams, one of the smallest attack rings made, right-spin only
  • Weight Disk: Wide, 13 grams
  • Blade Base: Grip Base, 7 grams, short with an extremely wide flat rubber tip
