Biography

Kenny — Manabu Saien in Japan, and Chief to everyone — is the Bladebreakers' mechanic, analyst and worrier, a small boy whose eyes are permanently hidden behind his fringe and whose laptop houses the talkative bit-beast Dizzi. He is Tyson's classmate from the first episode and the reason the team's blades keep evolving: nearly every upgrade from Dragoon S onward crosses his workbench, built out of years of accumulated battle data. He rarely blades himself, which is what makes his G-Revolution stand-in match against Tala land — fought on a spring-loaded hopping design of his own called Hopper Attack, built to dodge what it cannot survive. He grows into a full competitor when Max, Kai and Ray leave the team, and later builds the Hard Metal system that lets the rebels challenge BEGA.

Appearance

What They Look Like

A small boy behind a fringe of messy light brown hair that covers his eyes entirely, with blue glasses pushed up on top of it and lightning marks on both cheeks. He dresses plainly: white shirt, green tie, brown chinos.

Story by season

Where the seasons take them

Beyblade (2001)

Bladebreakers

Dizzi's data is what turns Tyson's scrappy instincts into a plan, first against Carlos and then through a full rebuild into Dragoon S after Kai wrecks the original Blade. The Blade Sharks kidnap Kenny to draw Tyson out, and though he is rescued unharmed, the regional qualifier humbles him directly: Kai crushes his Dizzi Blade in the C Block, and it is Kenny who talks Tyson out of throwing a punch over it rather than the other way around. He barely blades again all season, content analyzing every opponent from the sidelines, and even his one late battle at Lake Baikal against the Demolition Boys ends quickly, data gathering being where he actually earns his keep.

Beyblade V-Force (2002)

Bladebreakers

His parents finally get a scene this season, running the noodle shop upstairs from where Kenny actually lives, though the spotlight stays on the lab work: cracking Team Psykick's cyber bit-beasts becomes his main job once Gideon's men grab him early on and the team realizes analysis alone won't be enough this time. He even blades himself for once, needling a newly upgraded Tyson into a backyard match with a jumping Blade design built to dodge rather than trade hits, a preview of the hopping style he later turns into Hopper Attack. Between kidnappings and battle data, most of the team's V-series upgrades trace back to nights at his workbench.

Beyblade G-Revolution (2003)

BBA Revolution / G Revolutions

Short a blader for the tag qualifier, Kenny updates his old hopping design into Hopper and steps into the dish himself against Tala, pushing the abbey graduate hard enough that Tala visibly wonders if he can actually lose this one. Between engineering the MS-generation blades that carry the rebel alliance through the Justice 5, he spends an embarrassing amount of time fanboying over Japan's biggest pop star, Ming-Ming, a distraction that does not stop him from being genuinely rattled when Tyson and Ray end up fighting each other one month before the real fight with BEGA begins.

Briefing

What to know

  • Real name Manabu Saien; almost everyone calls him 'Chief' instead.
  • His laptop AI Dizzi functions as his English-dub bit-beast stand-in, though his actual bit is a frog named Hopper.
  • Parents run a noodle shop introduced in season 2; his mother is pushy about him helping out.
  • Becomes an official G-Revolutions competitor once other teammates leave for the season.
  • Only Bladebreaker to use the same Beyblade line (Hopper) across all three seasons.
  • English voice actress Alex Hood said his personality mirrors her own; puberty deepened his voice by Fierce Battle/G-Revolution.
