Biography

Judy Tate is Max's mother, a BBA research scientist who runs the PPB centre in New York and builds the All Starz around measurable data rather than instinct. In the first season that puts her on the opposite bench from her own son: the friendly tournament she arranges is really a data-gathering exercise, and the numbers she trusts are what fail her when Max beats the statistically favoured Michael. Her cool professionalism reads as coldness until that final. She is also one of the sport's best engineers — her lab upgrades Dragoon before Moscow, and in V-Force she runs the research into the ancient artefact carrying a bit-beast and helps clear Max's friend Alan. In G-Revolution she recruits Rick Anderson and fields him with Max as a tag team.

Story by season

Where the seasons take them

Beyblade (2001)

All Starz (coach)

When Max turns up on her research floor instead of the college she thought he attended, Judy is more unsettled than proud, and she uses the reunion to run the Bladebreakers through a rigged exhibition against her own trainees so she can log their data. Through the American rounds she keeps entering numbers into a laptop rather than cheering, and when the final comes down to her son against Michael she tries to keep Max out of the match entirely because her own statistics say he'll lose. He plays anyway and wins, undoing her model in front of her, and only once the tournament ends does she let herself be his mother again instead of his subject. Before Russia, her lab reworks Dragoon for the fight ahead.

Beyblade V-Force (2002)

PPB research lab

Her New York lab becomes the season's turning point once she shows the Bladebreakers a mysterious carved stone her team has kept secret for years, only for it to be stolen within the same visit. She throws herself into recovering it and clearing the name of the culprit once he's revealed as Max's old friend Alan, pushing an investigator off the case so Max can settle things through a match instead of an arrest. What her research eventually confirms is that the stone holds a bit-beast, and that the man responsible for its original disappearance is her one-time colleague Dr. Zagart, a discovery that pulls a decades-old mystery back into her work.

Beyblade G-Revolution (2003)

PPB All Starz (coach)

She writes to Max herself this time, plane ticket included, asking him to come home and blade for the All Starz rather than watching from New York. Recruiting Rick Anderson to fill out the roster, she coaches the reshaped team through the tag-team World Championships, and for once her pride in Max isn't buried under a research agenda — she's simply glad to see him and Rick do well.
