Description

Takara Tomy released this Defense Type Starter in Japan on July 16th, 2011, building it from the Variares Face Bolt, the Variares Fusion Wheel and the Delta Drive Performance Tip inside the 4D System. Its spirit is drawn from Ares, the Greek god of war whose Roman counterpart Mars shares a name with the planet Variares represents, and its ability to spin in either direction has been read as a nod to Mars' apparent retrograde motion, long noted by ancient astronomers. It was the second Metal Saga top built for dual-direction spin, after Gravity Destroyer AD145WD, and the first 4D-era release to carry three swappable parts.

In play and in the story

In the anime, Variares favoured its Flat and Wide Ball tips over the Delta Drive's Spike option, and could hold its attack-mode stance even outside battle — a trick real physics can't replicate, since that mode only engages from centrifugal force while spinning.

  • Released as a Starter in Japan on July 16th, 2011.
  • Reissued in a Gunmetal, purple-frame version as a WBBA G4 Prize.
  • Reissued as Variares D:D Mars Red Ver., a CoroCoro magazine exclusive in red.
  • Reissued as Variares D:D Phantom Blue Ver., a CoroCoro magazine exclusive in blue.

Community testing, Sep. 23, 2011 — summarised

The competitive view

Covers the 4D Beyblade VariAres D:D (BB-114), whose three-winged VariAres Metal Wheel shifts between an Attack Mode (PC Frame retracted, more metal exposed) and a Defense Mode (PC Frame extended, more plastic contact) as spin speed changes, alongside the three-tips-in-one Delta Drive Bottom.

VariAres' large gaps and wing indents generate strong Smash Attack (and some recoil), which the mode-change gimmick partially manages by exposing more metal at high spin speed; D:D's individual tips (S, WB, F) are each outclassed by better standalone bottoms (WD, CS, RF respectively), limiting it to sub-par balance combos.

Verdict as the draft gives it: VariAres is rated by some as surpassing Lightning, the prior benchmark Smash Attack wheel, in top-tier combos MF/-H VariAres CH120R2F/LRF and MF/-H VariAres R145R2F/LRF; the article recommends every blader own at least one.

  • Metal Wheel: VariAres - 43.6 grams, three-winged design with six indents per wing
  • Bottom: Delta Drive (D:D) - 5.4 grams, translucent black, height similar to 145WD
  • D:D houses Sharp, Wide Ball, and Flat tips on one rotating axis, selectable by pulling, twisting, and reseating the shaft
  • Other versions: VariAres D:D Mars Red Ver. and Phantom Blue Ver. (both CoroCoro Magazine exclusives)
