Description

The griffin blade of the Majestics' aristocratic captain, introduced when Robert dismantles Tyson aboard his yacht. Griffolyon takes flight and drops on its opponent with the Wing Dagger, and Robert's disciplined style makes it a fair match for anyone in the first season. Tyson's rematch win in Moscow is a measure of how far he has come. Robert returns in G-Revolution with Griffolyon 2 and the Majestics take a supporting role behind the main tournament.

Robert Jürgens of the Majestics battles with Griffolyon, an Attack Type top whose Cross Griffon ring and Griffolyon base later reappeared in a 2004 Japanese reissue called Bakutenryu Etanzel, coloured red instead of the original blue-grey. Hasbro's own recolour, marketed as Griffolyon 2, dressed the same build in purple with a purple-and-red griffin figure. Some releases ship with a snap-together figurine that folds down into the top itself, fragile but poseable, and comparable in role to Salamalyon's similar figure gimmick.

Parts in detail

Takara-line release built around the Cross Griffon attack ring and a dedicated, purpose-built Griffolyon Base. Collectors cross-reference a Hasbro counterpart with the pole gimmick relocated from the base to the ring, a purple Hasbro recolour (Griffolyon 2), and a late G-Revolution red recolour (Bakutenryu Etanzel) carrying a second, slightly shorter mold of the base's tip.

SlotPartWeightSpinNote
Attack Ring Cross Griffon 5.4 g Right (competitive) / Left (not competitive) In right spin it's a sturdy, hard-hitting smash ring that grinds down opponents' stamina thanks to thick, sharp contact points, trading a little extra recoil for more power than the popular Triple Wing; in left spin it carries heavy recoil with only modest power and isn't worth running.
Weight Disk Eight Balance 14.1 g A middling-weight disk with an unremarkable weight spread, outclassed by most competitive disks and especially Ten Balance; heavier plated copies can match its weight but remain a niche substitute at best.
Blade Base Griffolyon Base 7.3 g A narrow, rounded free-spinning tip riding on an inner plastic shaft gives poor stability, defense and movement, and a mold seam down the tip makes balance even worse; four poles hanging from the base scrape violently and add heavy recoil whenever the beyblade tilts. Collectors rate it a strong contender for worst blade base of the plastics generation, rivaled only by Jumping Base (Trygle).

Weights are single copies weighed on their own; a part can vary by a few tenths of a gram.

In play and in the story

Its aggressive Cross Griffon ring puts Griffolyon in the same conversation as Trygle, and competitive players tend to view it as a genuine alternative rather than a lesser substitute, worth owning alongside its rival rather than instead of it.

  • Reissued in Japan in 2004 as Bakutenryu Etanzel in red instead of blue-grey.
  • Reissued by Hasbro as Griffolyon 2 in purple with a purple-and-red griffin figure.

Community testing, Aug. 11, 2011 — summarised

The competitive view

Griffolyon's Cross Griffon ring is rated as rivaling Trygle's Triple Wing for right-spin smash attack, needing a Heavy Metal Core to tame recoil when paired with Gaia Dragoon V's metal-flat base. The Grease Cylinder base is rated one of the weakest ever produced, based on direct testing against Triple Wing.
