Biography

Ryuga is the white-haired, amber-eyed owner of the Forbidden Bey L-Drago and the driving antagonist of Beyblade: Metal Fusion, later evolving into a recurring rival-turned-ally across Metal Masters and Metal Fury. Corrupted by L-Drago's Dark Power into stealing bladers' souls, he is freed after losing to Gingka Hagane at Battle Bladers, then spends the rest of the saga chasing personal strength, eventually sacrificing his Legendary Blader power to Kenta Yumiya against Nemesis, after which his fate is left deliberately ambiguous.

Appearance and personality

What They Look Like, and How They Behave

Ryuga is muscular yet slim, with spiky white hair and amber eyes. He wears a black-and-gold tank top beneath a white coat, paired with black pants, and always leaves the coat's sleeves empty rather than putting his arms through them. A crown and a gauntlet, both relics of the Dragon Clan he belongs to, complete his look; the gauntlet is where he keeps L-Drago.

Ryuga begins cruel and sadistic, delighting in grinding down opponents' Beys and carrying a cocky certainty that no one else compares to him; he has zero patience for anyone he judges weak, allies included, and needles rivals like Gingka over painful subjects. Defeat at Battle Bladers and mastering the Dark Power soften him, though slowly — in Metal Masters he turns quieter and more withdrawn, valuing strength even more but with the old viciousness dulled, and lingering rage pushes him to strike at Hades Inc. out of spite rather than loyalty. In Metal Fury he still trains alone chasing power, even coveting Nemesis's strength, until time spent with Kenta thaws him, and he ultimately sacrifices himself, passing Kenta his Star Fragment.

Briefing

What to know

  • Owns the Forbidden Bey L-Drago, which evolves from Lightning L-Drago through Meteo L-Drago to L-Drago Destructor F:S across the trilogy.
  • Debuts as the sadistic, soul-stealing main antagonist of Metal Fusion and Gingka Hagane's central rival.
  • Freed from L-Drago's corrupting Dark Power after his Battle Bladers loss to Gingka, then becomes a solitary, strength-obsessed wanderer.
  • Becomes one of the Four Season Bladers, holding the Summer Constellation's Star Fragment, in Metal Fury.
  • Forms an unlikely bond with Kenta Yumiya, eventually gifting him his Star Fragment power to help defeat Nemesis.
  • Signature moves include Dragon Emperor Soaring Bite Strike and the escalating Dragon Emperor Supreme Flight and Life Destructor.
  • Finishes Metal Masters with a perfect win record, one of only a few Beys ever to achieve one.
  • His post-Metal Fury fate is deliberately left ambiguous in the anime, unlike the manga, where he survives into Shogun Steel continuity.

Notable battles

  • Lost to Gingka Hagane in the Battle Bladers finals, Metal Fusion MF050-MF051 (his only Metal Fusion loss)
  • Defeated Hikaru Hasama, Tsubasa Otori, and Kyoya Tategami during the Battle Bladers tournament
  • Won all recorded Metal Masters battles, including Zeo Abyss and Jack, for a perfect season record
  • Defeated fellow Legendary Bladers Kyoya, Gingka, and Yuki in quick succession in Metal Fury
  • Defeated Tsubasa at the Tower of Babel using his Ultimate Move, Dragon Emperor Life Destructor
  • Lost his final battle to Rago at the Lost Kingdom, Metal Fury 4D043-4D044

Quotes

In Their Own Words

  • Heee! Well, long time no see, Gingka Hagane!
Ryuga's first dialogue in the series
  • However! I can't remember anyone taking so many of my direct hits without completely collapsing. I'll give you credit for that!
  • You call that children's magic show the Dark Power? Don't make me laugh!
  • That being said, I have gotten my hands on a new power. One that makes the old Dark Force look like a toddler throwing a tantrum!
  • There is only one reverse rotating bey that may exist in this world. Only one! This Meteo L-Drago alone!
  • Don't get all misty on me. I just came to settle the score with a ghost from my past.
  • I alone managed to beat back the Dark Power, and succeeded in drawing out L-Drago's ultimate ability, and I harness the true power that I gain by putting my very life on the line to be the best I can be in my battles!
  • That one time, it was only for a brief shining moment, I became serious. I promised. TAKE IT, KENTA!!!

Claims We Could Not Check

  • His Japanese voice actor, Kenjiro Tsuda, also voiced Seto Kaiba in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters; both characters are tied to signature dragon monsters.
  • One of only two bladers, with Reiji Mizuchi, to use a 'Dark Move' instead of a standard Special Move.
  • His Shogun Steel spiritual successor is Sakyo Kurayami, who inherits a similar dragon-themed, reverse-rotation Beyblade.
  • He often hand-spun Meteo L-Drago at weaker opponents to show off its spin-stealing ability, a habit later echoed by Free De La Hoya in Beyblade Burst.
