About This Part

Friction is a driver Takara Tomy released for the Burst System's Cho-Z Layer line, debuting in Japan in the B-117 Starter, Revive Phoenix 10 Friction, on July 7th, 2018, and later in western countries in Hasbro's Pro Series Starter Pack, Perfect Phoenix 8'Proof Friction. It centres on a wide, ball-shaped POM thermoplastic tip, combining traits of Massive and Yielding, wrapped in a rubber ring reminiscent of Atomic's free-spinning ring. The wide tip would suggest strong defence, but the low friction of the POM plastic actually cuts into its knock-out resistance, and the rubber ring sits too high to ever touch the stadium floor and act as a brake.

In Play

In practice, the heavy Cho-Z, SwitchStrike, and God Layers it is usually paired with, plus the fact that a static ball grips better than a free-spinning one, give Friction better knock-out resistance than Atomic or Orbit and comparable stamina, though its poor stability against opposite-spin and spin-equalization opponents keeps the community from rating it above those two, calling it instead a solid alternative to Orbit worth adding to a collection.

  • Released in western countries in Hasbro's Pro Series Starter Pack, Perfect Phoenix 8'Proof Friction.

The Competitive View

The wide ball shape implies strong defense, but low-friction POM undercuts most of that knockout resistance; the rubber ring is meant to brake against knockouts, though its larger diameter makes floor contact rare, and the low overall friction improves burst resistance while leaving Friction behind Atomic in spin-equalization and opposite-spin roles due to the rubber's life-after-death-killing friction.
