Burst Limited

Burst Limited is the WBO ruleset for running ranked Beyblade Burst tournaments with a restricted parts pool aimed at keeping the metagame varied. It is played with Takara Tomy, Hasbro, and Youngtoys Burst-era tops in stadiums such as the Beystadium Standard Type or the Elite Champions Beystadium. Compared to an unrestricted Burst ruleset it strips out a set of dominant Layers, Forge Discs, all Chassis, and several Performance Tips, and layers in detailed equipment-wear and part-interaction rulings on top of the base Burst match procedure.

Building and launching

Beyblades and parts

  • In Deck-building Match Types, a given Layer or Layer component, Disc/Disc Frame, Driver/Driver Attachment, or Evolution Gear can only appear in one combo per player.
  • Level Chips, all God Chip variants (including Metal God Chips), and Gravity Rings other than Greatest Armor (G13) may be duplicated freely inside a deck.
  • Mixing a Hasbro and a Takara Tomy release of the same part in one deck is not allowed, though different driver families (Metal, High, SlingShock, HyperSphere, QuadDrive, etc.) can coexist as long as no family repeats.
  • Painted or coated equipment is only legal through the specific listed exceptions; unauthorized painting or coating that changes performance is an offense.
  • Grips, accessories and launcher exteriors may be painted, decorated or custom-built as long as the launcher's mechanical function is untouched and the opponent's launch is never impeded.
  • Stickers are restricted to the placements shown in each product's own instructions, with one extra identification sticker allowed per Layer and per Driver; only manufacturer or manufacturer-licensed stickers are permitted.
  • Parts may be hand-marked with small pen lines or dots purely to track orientation or tell combos apart, never for decoration.
  • A thin protective coat of clear nail polish over stickers is fine, but a heavy application that meaningfully changes part weight is not.
  • Worn launcher components can be swapped for an identical replacement part from another launcher, and Layer components can likewise be swapped for identical substitutes.
  • God Chip-compatible Layers must actually carry a God Chip; leaving the slot empty is not permitted.

Launchers

  • Every launcher/winder pairing has a target rotation count per launch, and real launches must land within 0.5 rotations of that number.
  • Counts range from 3.5 rotations (Proto/Entry Launcher) up to 10 rotations (Long BeyLauncher LR), with common options like the BeyLauncher/BeyLauncher L sitting at 7.
  • A winder-based launcher must be fired by pulling the winder out, never by pushing it in.
  • A legal launch releases the top inside the Launch Area from less than 20cm above the stadium floor.
  • Launchers must stay on the shooter's own side of the stadium and may never be used to block the opponent's launch.
  • Broken BeyLauncher handles are still permitted for use.

Hasbro mainline Energy Layers used with Takara Tomy Drivers, or Takara Tomy Layers used with Hasbro mainline Performance TipsbannedCross-brand incompatibility rule; Hasbro Pro Series parts count as Takara Tomy equivalents for this check.
Hasbro Energy Layers that have previously been used with a Takara Tomy DriverbannedThe rule applies retroactively: once a Hasbro Layer's slope has run on a Takara Tomy Driver it is treated as a damaged, broken part from then on, no matter what Driver it's paired with later.
Homemade or third-party stickersbannedOnly stickers from Takara Tomy, Hasbro or licensed products are allowed; a judge finding otherwise forces a part swap or a Match loss.
Foreign-substance coatings that alter performancebannedAny paint or coating changing performance outside the explicitly listed exceptions is an offense that can lead to disqualification.

Broken Beyblade or launcher partsbannedAny broken part is illegal to use unless the rulebook explicitly says otherwise for that situation.

A match, step by step

  1. Bladers are assigned Left/Right sides of the stadium by a fair method (coin flip, dice, rock-paper-scissors), and that side holds for the whole Match.
  2. Both bladers turn away and privately choose their Beyblade(s) within a 3-minute Beyblade Selection window, with the count depending on the Match Type.
  3. Outside coaching or equipment help is allowed only until a Blader declares themselves 'set' and hands their launcher and top to the judge for inspection.
  4. Once set, a Blader can no longer swap equipment and must announce their spin direction before the Match starts.
  5. The Battle begins on the judge's '3-2-1 Go Shoot!' call, with both tops launched simultaneously and contact with the stadium floor confirming the start.
  6. A Blader may request one relaunch (voiding the Battle) or one video review call (which does not void the Battle) per Battle for a valid reason, requested during or right after the countdown.
  7. After a Battle, both Bladers wait for the judge's ruling before touching their tops or voicing an opinion on the outcome.
  8. Points accumulate across Battles until one Blader reaches the victory total (3 to 5 points) set by the Match Type in use, winning the Match.

Penalties

  • Intentionally altering equipment performance illegally results in disqualification and possible removal from future Events.
  • Using homemade or third-party stickers that cannot be swapped out for a compliant part results in a Match loss.
  • Excess nail polish that meaningfully changes part weight, if not corrected, results in a Match loss.
  • Producing an illegal or unrepaired part after in-Battle breakage without an identical replacement results in a loss of the Match.
  • General rule violations or misconduct at an Event can lead to disqualification by the host and possible banning from future Events.

Optional rules an organiser may add

RuleEffect
Optional Rules (event-specific)Organizers may opt into WBO-approved rule tweaks or banlist variations per event; the specific list used is posted on that event's page, with full detail in the separate Optional Rules Guide.

Words the rulebook uses

Battle Zone
The floor and airspace inside the stadium walls where a Beyblade is considered actively in play.
Over Zone
An exit gap, pocket, or covered area of a stadium that a top can land in without being knocked out.
Launch Area
The section of stadium floor, or the area beneath a shroud opening, where a legal launch must land.
Knocked-out (KO)
A top has left the Battle Zone for good, or hit something outside the stadium other than a valid Over Zone landing.
Spinning
A top still counts as spinning while its top half visibly rotates in its launch direction; a restart after stopping does not resume an ended Battle.
Burst
A combo coming apart mid-Battle; this outcome outranks every other win condition when results happen simultaneously.
Separation
A piece coming off a combo without a full Burst, including an Attachment detaching mid-Battle.
Deck
The set of combinations a player builds ahead of a Deck Match Type Match, subject to the no-repeat and duplicate-allowance rules.
God Chip
A small performance piece slotted into compatible Layers; Layers built for one must use one.
Dual-spin part
A Layer or Layer Base with a selectable spin-direction mode, locked once submitted for inspection under most Match Types.

Section by section, in our words

The document's outline

How to Win
  • A Match is won by reaching the point total (3-5) the active Match Type requires.
  • Four win conditions score points: spin-out, knock-out, burst, and separation.
  • Recommended point values are 1 for spin-out, 2 for knock-out, 2 for burst, and 1 for separation.
  • Exact point values per Match Type live in the separate Match Types Guide.
Beyblade Selection
  • Side assignment is decided by a fair random method, and holds for the entire Match.
  • Bladers turn away and choose their top(s) in secret inside a 3-minute window.
  • Coaching or equipment help is allowed during selection, but a player can be asked to disclose any help received.
  • Declaring 'set' and submitting equipment for judge inspection ends selection and locks in the loadout.
  • During selection, leaving the stadium area, turning around early, spying, or post-'set' equipment swaps are all forbidden.
Launching
  • A Battle starts on the judge's countdown call, once both tops have touched the stadium floor.
  • Legal launches enter the Launch Area from under 20cm above the floor and can't be aimed at the opponent's top mid-air.
  • Launchers stay within the shooter's own half and can't obstruct the opponent; the stadium itself can't be touched.
  • A relaunch (voiding the Battle) can be called for launcher malfunction or being bumped; a review call (not voiding the Battle) can be requested when video might show an early-contact or interference issue.
  • Each Blader gets one relaunch or review call per Battle by default, requested during or right after the countdown; judges can grant extras.
  • After a Battle, neither player may touch their top or announce an opinion on the result before the judge rules.
Optional Rules
  • WBO-approved rule and banlist variations exist for organizers to fit their local communities.
  • Which Optional Rules apply, if any, is announced per event on that event's page.
  • Full detail and the available list sit in the separate Optional Rules Guide.
Launcher Regulations
  • Each launcher and winder combination has a target rotation-per-launch figure, checked to within 0.5 rotations.
  • Rotation targets span from 3.5 (Proto/Entry Launcher) to 10 (Long BeyLauncher LR).
Beyblade/Part-Specific Rulings
  • Maximum Garuda's Layer can only run the chip it ships with, or a Metal God Chip in its place.
  • Dual-spin part modes lock at submission in 1on1/P3C1/Deck, but only one dual-spin Layer config per deck applies in 3on3/5G.
  • The Gatinko-generation and HyperSphere-generation Union Layer Base/Sword cannot be mixed together.
  • Revive/Dread Phoenix P4 armor pieces stay tied to their Layer Body for the Match, can't be hand-picked-up mid-Battle, and can't cross the Hasbro/Takara Tomy brand line.
  • The Bullet Driver's detached Bullet piece stays in play and scores for its owner, but the combo loses if its top half is knocked out, stopped, or bursted.
  • Further named rulings cover the 12 Core Disc, the α-series Layers, Hasbro Pro Series brand mixing, Gravity Ring duplication, and Attachments like Xceed/Zone Chips and Evolution Gears.
Event Code of Conduct
  • WBO Events run on volunteer judging and expect fair play and good sportsmanship from every Blader.
  • Bladers should be honest with judges, check before doing anything rules-questionable, and welcome newer players.
  • Bladers must never taunt, throw a Match, disrupt other Matches, or handle another Blader's equipment without permission.
  • Breaking or dodging these expectations can get a Blader disqualified and potentially barred from future Events.
If you disagree with a judge's decision...
  • A Blader can dispute a call but must still accept the judge's ruling in the moment.
  • Lasting disagreements go through the Tournament Incident Report Form, with any photo/video evidence emailed to WBO events staff.
  • Match-result disputes must be filed within 7 days of the tournament.
  • A proven wrongful result gets the Match voided; a Match winner is only reversed if a judge is proven to have colluded to fix it.
Gameplay Appendix
  • The Play Area covers the whole stadium, split into the in-play Battle Zone and the exit-like Over Zones.
  • The Launch Area is the floor (or shroud-bounded floor) a launch must land in, including sloped entry ramps on some stadiums.
  • A top is knocked out once it leaves the Battle Zone for good or strikes something outside a valid Over Zone landing.
  • Spinning is judged by visible rotation in the launch direction; a restart after stopping doesn't reopen a finished Battle.
  • Win-condition ties resolve in order: Burst beats everything, and a Knock-out beats a same-instant Spin-out except when it's the Burst-vs-KO case (KO wins there too).
  • In-Battle part or launcher breakage voids the Battle; the owner needs an identical replacement or forfeits, and a simultaneous double-break with no replacements resets the whole Match to selection.
  • Multi-mode parts can switch mode before a Match or between Battles (secretly if both sides want to swap at once), and gimmick-triggered mode changes must reset each Battle.
  • Multi-Beyblade Match Types (P3C1, 3on3, 5G, Deck) enforce no-repeat rules on Layers, Discs, and Drivers across a player's combos, with named duplicate allowances for chips and most Gravity Rings, and launchers/accessories locked in during deck building.
Photography Policy
  • Attending a WBO Event means accepting the possibility of appearing in photos or video shot by staff, organizers, or other attendees.
  • A Blader who prefers not to be filmed can ask the host to pass that along, though full exclusion can't be guaranteed.
  • Anyone shooting photo or video at an Event is asked to do so respectfully and to honor requests to stop filming a specific person.
