Description

Guardian Driger reached Japanese shelves in December 2001 as part of Takara Tomy's Magnacore System, built around the Great Tiger Attack Ring, an Eight Heavy Weight Disk, a Neo Right Spin Gear and an SG Flat Base. Great Tiger's near-circular shape leaves the top few points of contact and gives it strong survival in the stadium, though the free-spinning wing piece it carries scrapes against stadium terrain and can chip with use. Two further colourways followed, a clear blue Coro Coro edition and a metallic blue release bundled with a Game Boy Advance promotion.

Parts in detail

A CoroCoro magazine exclusive later reissued by Hasbro in a bronze colourway during the G-Revolution line; collectors note the sub-ring's orientation on the attack ring differs between releases.

SlotPartWeightSpinNote
Attack Ring War Lion (Core AR) 3.7 g Both A small, low-recoil core ring in both spin directions; its compact oval shape is a little easier to land solid hits on than more defensive shapes, but it remains an excellent, versatile defensive core widely used in compacts, zombies and general defense, and is arguably the best right-spin core to pair with a defensive sub-ring.
Sub Attack Ring Great Tiger Sub AR 1.6 g Visually close to the common 'Wing' sub-ring but thicker and slightly differently angled; its thickness lets it lock in place in a few setups, but the resulting recoil and weak smash attack leave it inferior to War Bear's sub-ring, and even an illegal pairing under Dual Dragon shows it's too wide and recoil-prone to be useful.
Weight Disk Eight Heavy 15.3 (regular mold) / 15.5 (indent mold) g Outclassed overall by the heavier Ten Heavy for the same roles, but still a workable choice in compact customizations and a backup for weight defense, semi-flat stamina and force smash; the Takara/SonoKong indent mold and the Hasbro mold perform almost identically apart from a small weight gap.
Spin Gear Neo Right Spin Gear Shells + South Magnecore 2.3 (shells) + 3.3 (core) g Right Neo shells are the preferred right-spin shell for their compatibility with Neo cores and the Heavy Metal Core, making them essential for compacts, weight defense, force smash and traditional upper attack; the South Magnecore adds enough weight to help control recoil on stamina-conscious attack setups, and its magnetism mainly just affects how easily it seats against magnetized tips.
Blade Base SG Flat Base 4.4 g The shortest base in the plastics lineup, giving it some value for traditional upper attack, though its tip struggles to flower-pattern well and offers only average recoil control and stamina; it can also fill a budget semi-flat-stamina role alongside Wide Defense.

Weights are single copies weighed on their own; a part can vary by a few tenths of a gram.

In play and in the story

Builders chasing endurance or defence rate Great Tiger highly for its rounded profile and often pair it with War Lion's wing piece to cut friction losses; even so, many consider Galeon Attacker the stronger overall purchase, which leaves Guardian Driger more a collector's item than a tournament staple.

  • Released in Japan in December 2001.
  • A clear blue Coro Coro Ver. and a metallic blue Game Boy Advance promotional version followed.

Community testing, Oct. 21, 2011 — summarised

The competitive view

Guardian Driger consists of the Great Tiger attack ring, the Eight Heavy weight disk, the Neo Right spin gear, and the SG Flat Base, with separate combinations for survival, defense and compact play built around swapping in War Lion as the sub-ring. Great Tiger's small, nearly round shape gives it high spin velocity and strong survival, undercut somewhat by the friction its own wings create, which is why the War Lion sub-ring is recommended as a swap. Whether the sub-ring spins freely, and how the set-up performs for survival and balance, is unclear.
