Mathilda

Biography

Mathilda is the youngest and smallest of the Barthez Battalion, a pink-haired defender whose hedgehog Pierce Hedgehog curls into a spiked wall. She is the team's peacemaker, rarely successfully, kept quiet and obedient by her coach and left to work through her own feelings alone until Miguel — on whom she has a crush — talks her through them. She is also the one Barthez treats worst: he has her sacrifice her own Beyblade to sabotage Daichi, and she battles afterwards with a blade rebuilt out of her teammates' spare parts, loses, and puts her team out of the tournament. Those matches, and the one against Raul, are what finally turn the rest of them against him. She has no killer instinct and does not want one, and joins the alliance in the BEGA arc.

Mathilda wears her pink hair short, with two tall locks standing up at the crown like antennae — a look tied to the butterfly wings that appear when she blades — and her eyes match the pink of her hair. She stands shorter than anyone else on her team, and shorter than every other girl in the tournament. Her outfit runs a sleeveless yellow shirt and teal shorts, thigh-high purple socks and long purple gloves, white boots striped in black, and a small sleeveless jacket with black stripes and orange trim. Goggles are a constant, whether pushed up on her head or hung around her neck.

Mathilda says little and rarely speaks out of turn, wary of provoking her coach, Jean Paul Barthez, whose strict regime has her answering orders the way a soldier would, without argument. Trouble she keeps to herself, working through it alone rather than telling anyone — though Miguel has a habit of tracking her down and talking things over anyway. She is the peacemaker of her team, stepping in whenever conflict flares, from her teammates' standoff with Barthez to a fight between Julia and Mariah that ends up pulling her into a three-way battle herself. Her feelings for Miguel keep her close to him, and time together teaches her that the intimidating front he shows the world isn't who he really is.

• Daichi Sumeragi Daichi is never her enemy by choice — Barthez orders Mathilda to wreck her own blade purely to cripple his, and she carries out the sabotage against her own wishes.
• Raul Fernandez Raul is the opponent she faces down with a Beyblade rebuilt overnight from her teammates' spare parts, after her own was sacrificed; she loses to him and the team is out.
• MiguelClaudeAaron Barthez Battalion
• Barthez Barthez treats her worse than the others, forcing her to sacrifice her own Beyblade for his scheme; that single order does more than anything else to turn the team against him.
• Julia Fernandez Julia is one of two bladers Mathilda competes against for the alliance's single open roster spot; she loses out to her but the rivalry never curdles into anything unfriendly.
