Biography

Jean-Paul Barthez coaches the European team that carries his name and treats his bladers as disposable parts of a scheme to win by any means: sabotaged blades, rigged stadium tricks, orders to take an injury or to hurt an opponent. Behind a public face as a fatherly coach he abuses Aaron, Claude, Mathilda and above all the rebellious Miguel, and he is taking his own orders from Boris Balkov. It makes the Battalion the villains of the round robin until the four of them fire him and start again on their own terms. He is a small-scale antagonist whose downfall clears the way for the season's real threat. The manga has him only briefly and never names him; the fuller, nastier version is the anime's.

Where the seasons take them

Beyblade G-Revolution (2003)

Barthez Battalion (coach)

Egypt is where Barthez's methods finally catch up with him. He wires Aaron's Beyblade with a hidden net launcher rather than trust him to win straight, and when the plan backfires he still shows no shame about it — winning by any means is the only method he's ever taught this team. Tala later exposes that Barthez has been taking his own orders from Boris Balkov the whole time, chasing the same shadow ambitions with a smaller, uglier budget. His bladers stop tolerating him once they realize they've been played as pieces rather than coached as people: Miguel fires him outright, and the team throws out his tactics along with him, choosing to lose on their own terms rather than win on his.
