Biography

Benkei Hanawa is a core member of Gingka's gang across the Metal Saga, introduced as Kyoya Tategami's loyal second-in-command in the bullying Face Hunters gang. After losing repeatedly to Gingka and being humbled, Benkei reforms, mentors Kenta Yumiya, and eventually reunites with Kyoya as true friends rather than boss and lackey. He fights with Dark Bull, a gift from the villain Doji, competing as the masked wrestler "Masked Bull" on Team Wild Fang during Metal Masters. Loud, big-hearted, and endlessly devoted to Kyoya, he supports the group through the Dark Nebula, Spiral Force, and Nemesis story arcs without ever quite matching the top-tier bladers.

Appearance and personality

What They Look Like, and How They Behave

Benkei carries a big, heavyset frame with a prominent belly and famously oversized feet. His short purple hair usually disappears under a white beanie stamped with a red bull's skull, and his eyes are a reddish brown. He typically wears a red-and-black jacket with a red stripe down the front, zipped over his torso, white wristbands, grey shorts and black shoes, with a brown belt and holster hidden under the jacket to carry his Bey gear. As the wrestling persona Masked Bull he swaps this for a full wrestler's costume. By the time of Shogun Steel his look has matured: brown laced boots, green cargo trousers, a black jacket with a puffy white collar and yellow-striped sleeves and pockets, and a beard he didn't have before.

Underneath a burly, bullyish exterior, Benkei is soft-hearted and quick to well up, especially where Kyoya is concerned — he even embraces him the moment Kyoya awakens. He trails after Kyoya with stubborn devotion, absorbing rough treatment without complaint, and he rarely quits when a battle turns hard. That loyalty wasn't always aimed well: as a Face Hunter he bullied smaller kids, a pattern that only broke after he befriended Kenta, the same change that got him thrown out of the gang. He is loud, easily riled into squabbles with friends, but never holds a grudge, and his overconfidence occasionally outruns his ability, as when he rated his own chances against Ryuga far too highly. Despite the occasional naivety, his friends value him deeply.

Dark Bull's head-down charges hit hard, but he loses to every top blader he meets; his loyalty and heart are what keep him in the fight.

Claims We Could Not Check

  • Famously stutters "B-b-b-b-b-b-bull!" before launching, in the English dub.
  • The only Wild Fang member not using a regular 145 Spin Track or a Defense Type Bey.
  • Along with Yu, Tsubasa, and Hikaru, his Bey never evolves across the saga.
  • He, Teru, and Ryuga are the only Battle Bladers losers who suffer no bad consequence for losing.
  • Early in Metal Fusion he oddly seems to already know Bey names before officially learning them.
