About This Part
Takara Tomy launched Geist Fafnir in Japan on September 22nd, 2018 inside the B-122 Starter, Geist Fafnir 8' Absorb, building it for the Burst System and its Cho-Z Layer System. It is a Stamina Type Layer shaped as a triangle with three dragon heads bearing an "F" mark, evoking the Nordic dragon Fafnir, and its Cho-Z construction lines metal between those heads, adding weight beyond most God Layers. Rubber-tipped "F" teeth let it equalize spin against a right-spinning rival while the Layer itself turns left, and an automatic mode-change gimmick lets the rubber blades extend at low spin speed and retract at high spin speed.
In Play
Its left-spin nature curbs recoil against right-spin opponents despite the pointed, triangular perimeter, and the rubber teeth drag a slower right-spin rival's speed toward its own through friction; against another left-spin piece the same rubber instead acts as a brake, risking a self-burst if the rival resists bursting better. Competitive bladers pair it with heavy Discs for knock-out defence and stamina, and with Atomic, Bearing, Destroy or Destroy' Drivers to supply the precession needed to out-spin a rival, though the community rates it outclassed overall by Hell Salamander.
- Debuted in Japan on September 22nd, 2018 in the B-122 Starter, Geist Fafnir 8' Absorb.
- Reissued in the B-146 Random Booster Vol. 16 as Geist Fafnir Ratchet Gyro.
- Released as Geist Fafnir 8'Proof Absorb (Saint Dragon Ver.) under product code B-00.
The Competitive View
Against right-spin opponents the rubber teeth act as a friction hook, equalizing spin and propelling Geist Fafnir faster while cutting recoil (more pronounced than on Drain Fafnir, though weaker against very light opponents); against left-spin opponents the rubber instead brakes, which can burst a weaker opponent but risks self-burst or heavy stamina loss against a tougher one.
Verdict as the draft gives it: Suited to spin-equalization/stamina combos such as Geist Fafnir 0/2/4/5/7/10 Cross/Glaive Atomic/Bearing/Destroy, though the author notes final performance hinges on tooth strength.
- Left Spin
- Triangular perimeter with metal between the dragon heads
- Rubber 'F' motifs, with a larger exposed rubber area than predecessor Drain Fafnir
Related parts named in the draft: Drain Fafnir, Cross, Glaive, Atomic, Bearing, Destroy.
