About This Part
Takara Tomy built Drain Fafnir as a round, left-spin Stamina-type layer for the Burst System's God Layer System, first sold in Japan on April 29th, 2017, in the B-79 starter Drain Fafnir 8 Nothing. Its three dragon heads carry clear plastic horns and rubber 'F' accents at two points around the rim, named for the Norse dragon Fafnir, while three claws hold a fixed God Chip depicting the bit-beast at the centre. The uneven, clawed perimeter pushes weight outward for a high Outward Weight Distribution, and its God Ability, Drain Spin, lets the rubber sections equalize spin against a right-spin rival.
In Play
Because it spins left, Drain Fafnir shrugs off recoil against right-spin opponents and can equalize spin with them through its rubber and horn design when it is turning slower, though it struggles to do the same against smooth, round left-spin layers such as Blaze Ragnaruk and Maximum Garuda. Against a left-spin rival it cannot equalize at all, and its rubber can either brake and burst the opponent or, if its own Burst Resistance falls short, cause a self-burst instead. The community once ranked it a top Stamina choice and still calls it a must-have for the WBO's Burst Limited format thanks to its Spin-Equalization potential, though it considers it outclassed for Burst Standard since the Cho-Z Layer System arrived and it holds no legal status in Burst Classic.
- Debuted in Japan on April 29th, 2017, in the B-79 starter Drain Fafnir 8 Nothing.
- Reissued in the B-98 God Customize Set as Drain Fafnir 7Star Zephyr.
- Reissued as the Crimson White Ver.
- Reissued as the Crystal Blue Ver.
- Reissued as the Evil Dragon Ver.
- Drain Fafnir uses an inverted F in its emblem to distinguish it from Fang Fenrir, since both names abbreviate to F.
- It is one of the few layers whose name carried over unchanged into its Hasbro release, apart from the added F3 suffix.
The Competitive View
Its left-spin direction and rounded triangular shape keep recoil low against both spin directions. Against a faster right-spin opponent, the rubber sections let it equalize spin gear-like, cushion impacts, and hook onto the opponent to speed itself up while cutting recoil (though less effectively than the L-Drago II wheel, since less rubber is exposed). Against left-spin opponents it can't equalize spin; its clear horns instead absorb hits like a standard stamina layer. Its high Outward Weight Distribution also gives strong Burst resistance and Burst Attack — it resists losing spin speed to a slower right-spin opponent (causing that opponent to Burst instead) and resists slowing against left-spin opponents. Balance combo: Drain Fafnir Spread/Knuckle/Gravity/8Vortex/4Vortex Revolve/Atomic/Orbit; Attack combo: Drain Fafnir Gravity/8Vortex/4Vortex Xtreme/Hold.
Verdict as the draft gives it: Rated a must-have, versatile left-spin layer for both Attack and Balance/spin-equalization roles.
