About This Part

Volcanic is a Driver made by Takara Tomy for the Burst System's Cho-Z Layer System, released in Japan on March 17th, 2018 inside the B-104 Starter, Winning Valkyrie 12 Volcanic. It runs a tilting, free-turning flat plate with a textured surface — essentially a smaller-diameter Hold — set at a slightly taller height than most tips. That broad plate makes it one of the quicker, more aggressive drivers around, while the textured surface helps it cling to the Tornado Ridge, its smaller size and loose spin keep that speed manageable, and the tilt adds stability so more of the textured ring stays in contact with the dish.

In Play

Its narrower plate makes banking easier to hold than on Hold, though the pattern still breaks down quickly. Build tolerances vary, too — a looser-spinning copy trades some speed for extra stamina and easier control. Its added height was meant to force more disc-to-layer contact and trigger bursts, but layer heights rarely let that happen. The same free-spinning, tilting design suits spin-equalization builds well, giving good precession and life-after-death, though the smaller plate caps that life-after-death potential and the extra height keeps it from reaching the rubber on drivers like Drain Fafnir or Spriggan Requiem. Overall it beats Hold on stamina and control but falls behind it on attack, spin-equalization and life-after-death, and both trail Destroy badly enough that the community keeps Volcanic mainly for the collection.

The Competitive View

When it spins more freely it circles the stadium center slowly with more Stamina and easier control at the cost of speed, and on impact the textured ring suddenly grips the floor for bursts of acceleration; it also performs well in Spin-Equalization combinations thanks to its tilting, free-spinning action, though its smaller diameter limits Life-After-Death potential compared to Hold.

  • Tilting, free-rotating flat tip with textured ring, described as a smaller Hold
  • Speed and stamina vary tip-to-tip based on how freely each unit spins
