About This Part

Variable is a Driver made by Takara Tomy for the Burst System's Dual Layer System, first sold in Japan on April 2nd, 2016 inside the B-34 Starter, Victory Valkyrie Boost Variable, and later carried west by Hasbro's Epic Rivals Battle Set. Its tip is rubber, cast with two tiers of spikes — six tall ones sitting above fourteen shorter ones — set at a normal driver height and built to break down with use, so unlike most rubber tips it gets more aggressive rather than less as it wears.

In Play

A fresh copy runs its six tall spikes at a mild, Blow-like clip without much stamina to show for it, and Takara Tomy's harder rubber sheds that first set fairly quickly. Once the fourteen shorter spikes take over, speed jumps to match or beat Xtreme thanks to the wider contact patch, but banking becomes hard to hold, self-knockouts turn common, and stamina drops further — the community regards this stage as its best. Once those spikes are gone too, the bare rubber base runs even faster but with worse control and stamina still, struggling to hold the Tornado Ridge; its shorter worn-down height does give attack builds some destabilization leverage, and its wide base leaves it with strong life-after-death, making it a safer pick against spin-equalization opponents. It sees play in the Winning ValkyrieSieg Xcalibur attack build alongside a 0/2/4/5/7 Bump/Meteor/Vortex disc and frame, though a worn Variable's speed and width make that combination hard to steer. Overall, its lack of control and stamina leaves Takara Tomy's version behind Xtreme, Hold and Accel, though it still shines in attack builds that do not need precision and against other Xtreme-based attackers; it counts as a fine pickup rather than a must-have. Hasbro's release runs on softer rubber, faster on its first six spikes and slower to wear down, but settles to centre too quickly for real attack use even unworn, and its control worsens further once worn — bladers keep it mainly for the collection.

  • Carried into western markets through Hasbro's Epic Rivals Battle Set.

The Competitive View

Fresh, Variable is mildly aggressive at Blow-like speed; once the first six spikes wear off, speed rivals or beats Xtreme but control, banking, self-knockout risk and stamina all worsen further as it wears fully bare, though the resulting height loss is minor.

Verdict as the draft gives it: The Takara Tomy version is outclassed by Xtreme, Hold, and Accel and recommended for collection only; the Hasbro version is rated a welcome addition as a solid Xtreme alternative, used in the attack combo Valtryek V2/Roktavor Heavy/Gravity Variable.
