About This Part

Evolution is a driver Takara Tomy and Hasbro both released, for the Burst System's Cho-Z Layer and SwitchStrike lines respectively, debuting in Japan in the B-127 Starter, Cho-Z Valkyrie Zenith Evolution, on November 17th, 2018, and in western countries in the SwitchStrike Starter Pack, Turbo Valtryek V3 Zenith Evolution. It carries a tall rubber tip built from two nested rings of spikes, designed to wear down and snap off with use so that the driver grows more aggressive over time rather than less, following the same pattern as its predecessor Variable. A fresh driver starts with a mild attack pattern from its outer six spikes; once those break away, the inner fourteen spikes take over and push its speed past Xtreme, at the cost of control and stamina; once those wear through as well, only a smooth rubber base remains, offering the highest speed but the worst control of the three stages.

In Play

The community treats Evolution as an upgrade to Variable that shares its lack of control and stamina, and notes its taller starting height actually hurts its attack potential compared with its predecessor, though it remains a useful pick against Xtreme'-based attack combinations for bladers who don't need fine control.

  • Released in Japan in the B-127 Starter, Cho-Z Valkyrie Zenith Evolution, on November 17th, 2018.
  • Released in western countries in the SwitchStrike Starter Pack, Turbo Valtryek V3 Zenith Evolution.

The Competitive View

Fresh, Evolution is mildly aggressive at Blow-like speed with poor stamina; once the tall spikes wear off, speed rivals or exceeds Xtreme but control, banking, and self-knockout risk worsen; fully worn, it is fastest but nearly uncontrollable, though its wide base gives it decent life-after-death.

Verdict as the draft gives it: Outclassed by predecessor Variable because its taller starting height hurts attack potential; recommended for collection purposes only.

  • Taller-than-average starting height, reducing to standard height as spikes wear
  • Stage 1: six tall rubber spikes; Stage 2: fourteen shorter spikes after Stage 1 breaks off; Stage 3: bare rubber base
  • Takara Tomy rubber described as brittle, wearing the first spike set relatively quickly

Related parts named in the draft: Variable, Xtreme, Blow.
