About This Part

Atomic is a Driver Takara Tomy released for the God Layer System and SwitchStrike System, debuting in Japan on April 29th, 2017 through Random Booster Vol. 6 and reaching western shelves with Hasbro's SwitchStrike Starter Pack built around Tempest Wyvron W3 4Glaive Atomic. It pairs a free-rotating ball tip, larger than its predecessor Orbit, with a four-tabbed free-spinning ring, and the free rotation keeps friction with the stadium floor low for strong Stamina and Spin-Equalization while the tabs act as brakes against knockouts.

In Play

The community credits Atomic with high Stamina and Life-After-Death when matched with heavy Discs and wide Frames, and rates it a solid but no longer dominant Stamina choice against same-spin opponents, since Takara Tomy's own Bearing' and Drift now outclass it against opposite-spin opponents and Hasbro's three production variants trail newer options such as Atomic-S and Kick; it is not legal in the WBO's Burst Classic Format.

  • Released by Takara Tomy for the Burst System, God Layer System and SwitchStrike System.
  • Debuted in Japan on April 29th, 2017 with Random Booster Vol. 6.
  • Debuted in western countries with Hasbro's SwitchStrike Starter Pack built around Tempest Wyvron W3 4Glaive Atomic.
  • Hasbro produced three distinct manufacturing variants of Atomic across its Starter Pack, Combat Pack and second Starter Pack releases.

The Competitive View

The oversized ball drives a semi-aggressive early pattern toward the Tornado Ridge, but its free spin undercuts most Knock-Out resistance and its width means the tabs rarely brake against the floor, making it a weak defensive tip. Its real strength is spin equalization: the free rotation helps match spin with an opposite-spinning opponent, its wide roaming lets it stall out a weak launch, and the free ring extends life-after-death for outspinning. Cited use: the spin-equalization build Drain Fafnir Polish/Yell/Spread Atomic, pairing Atomic's traits with Drain Fafnir's rubber-aided equalization.

Verdict as the draft gives it: Outclassed as a defensive tip, but a useful spin-equalization piece — described as a welcome collection addition rather than a must-have.

  • Debut: B-80 Random Booster Vol. 6, April 29, 2017
  • Free-rotating ball roughly 3.4x Orbit's ball volume / 1.3x its diameter, plus a four-tabbed free-rotating outer ring
  • Takara Tomy: B-80-01 Tornado Wyvern 4 Glaive Atomic (translucent lime green/opaque purple ring); B-80-02 Exceed Evileye Gravity Atomic (translucent dark green/opaque red ring); B-80-03 Fang Fenrir Polish Atomic (translucent black/opaque yellow ring)
