Biography

Tsubasa Otori is a top-tier Metal Saga blader and secret WBBA agent who infiltrates the Dark Nebula to investigate L-Drago before becoming the third member of Team GanGan Galaxy. Composed, tactical, and guided by all five senses in battle, he wields Earth Eagle 145WD and eventually the finisher Shining Tornado Buster, but is plagued through Metal Masters by a Dark Power awakened after his first loss to Ryuga. He overcomes it using Ryuga's own advice to embrace rather than resist it, later helps defeat Nemesis in Metal Fury, and succeeds Ryo Hagane as WBBA President by Shogun Steel.

Appearance and personality

What They Look Like, and How They Behave

Tsubasa stands tall for his age, with a tan complexion and long silver-grey hair worn in a low ponytail, loose bangs falling over golden-brown eyes that flare red under a purple shadow when the Dark Power takes hold of him. Through the first three seasons he wears a sleeveless brown shirt trimmed in lavender that bares his midriff, paired with loose white trousers, brown boots and brown fingerless gloves reaching his wrists, with his Beyblade kept in a storage box strapped to his right forearm. By Shogun Steel his hair has been cut back to neck length and his wardrobe turns sharply more formal: a black button-down shirt under a red suit top, white khakis, a black belt and black shoes.

Tsubasa is composed and level-headed, a tactician who reads a battle as it unfolds and adapts on the fly, drawing on sharp instincts to outthink opponents. He carries himself as an honest, kind-hearted wanderer, ready to help anyone he meets, which makes his stint with Dark Nebula look like a betrayal until it emerges he infiltrated the group as an undercover WBBA investigator rather than joining it for real. Once he throws in with Gingka's group he stays loyal to them, forming a lasting battle partnership with Yu Tendo. A darker instinct later creeps into his blading and shakes his self-belief, and only Ryuga's advice, to stop resisting that side of himself and accept it, brings him back to form. He also quietly resents never being named a Legendary Blader, even as he gives everything to their final fight.

Claims We Could Not Check

  • His name (Tsubasa = 'wing,' Otori = 'great bird') plays off his Bey, Earth Eagle.
  • The demonic Dark Power inside him is a pun on the Japanese kanji for his Bey's name, which contains 'Aku' (evil).
  • First blader to break Ryuga's dark move, even before Gingka managed it.
  • English VA David Reale also voiced Kai Hiwatari, another bird-Bey wielder.
  • Fans briefly speculated he was romantically involved with Madoka before the show clarified she is his assistant.
