Biography

Kyoya Tategami is Gingka Hagane's chief rival across the Metal Saga, introduced as the arrogant leader of the bullying Face Hunters gang before back-to-back losses to Gingka send him seeking greater power. He trains under the villain Doji's Dark Nebula, briefly turning cold and destructive with Rock Leone before breaking free and rejoining Gingka's side. He later leads Africa's Team Wild Fang at the World Championships, and becomes a Legendary Blader of the Four Seasons once his bey evolves into Fang Leone. Fiercely proud and blunt, he never quite beats Gingka outright but grows into a trusted, still-competitive friend.

Appearance and personality

What They Look Like, and How They Behave

Tall and tanned with a muscular build, he carries sharp blue eyes set with notably small irises and spiky dark green hair gathered into a shoulder-length ponytail. Fang-like teeth and matching X-shaped scars beneath each eye complete a distinctly leonine look. Through Metal Fusion and Metal Masters he wears a sleeveless-armed army-green coat over a tattered black shirt baring his midriff, with a wide silver-buckled brown belt, fingerless gloves, boots, beige cargo trousers and a round pendant. By Metal Fury the coat becomes a sleeveless black jacket over a cropped green tank, the belt and gloves carried over, light grey trousers tucked into the boots, and the pendant swapped for a grey fang charm.

Early on he plays the cocky antagonist, throwing himself into every fight without hesitation and holding rivals to the same all-or-nothing standard of honour he sets for himself. Falling under Doji's sway hardens him further, turning him cold and destructive and fixed on making Gingka suffer, before a second defeat snaps him out of it. Freed from that alliance he mellows into someone steadier and more thoughtful, forming a loyal, if prickly, friendship with Benkei and gradually easing his guard around former rivals. Pride and a fierce independence never fully leave him — he resists leaning on anyone and bristles at being praised or filmed — yet genuine care for his bey and, eventually, for the people around him breaks through the harder edges.

Claims We Could Not Check

  • His surname Tategami plays on the Japanese word for "mane," fitting his lion motif, and can also read as "divine shield."
  • He, Ryuga, and Kenta are the only Legendary Bladers who never use a 3-Segment Launcher.
  • Fans have compared him to Kai Hiwatari from the Original Series as the stoic rival archetype.
  • He reappears in the Zero-G manga inheriting his father's company, paralleling Kai's ending in the original manga.
  • Concept art shows an early design with a single scar and an earring that was cut before the final look.
