Biography

Free De La Hoya is the tritagonist of Beyblade Burst Evolution, originally BC Sol's captain in Spain before briefly joining America's Raging Bulls and eventually becoming a member of the elite Big Five. Lazy, carefree, and long undefeated as the world's number-one blader, he rarely uses his launcher against teammates, preferring hand-spins, until an opponent proves genuinely challenging. His rivalry with Lui Shirosagi, mentorship of Valt Aoi and the Hizashi brothers, and eventual forfeit injury against Valt in the International Blader's Cup mark his arc, while later seasons see his Fafnir Beyblade evolve through Turbo, Surge, and QuadDrive.

Appearance and personality

What They Look Like, and How They Behave

His hair runs long, messy and spiked, blond but for one red streak, above black eyes whose dark-grey rings all but swallow the pupils. In Evolution he dresses down in a loose yellow tank-top, a dark-teal arm gauntlet on a brown-and-gold belt, light-brown jeans, and dark brown shoes. Turbo adds height and swaps this for a turquoise-striped yellow shirt, a white-striped brown belt, blue boots trimmed red and white, and a fingerless glove over the gauntlet. Surge keeps the yellow shirt but adds a red sash, a stitched gamboge kilt, baggy light-brown trousers and red-marked blue boots; QuadDrive recolours the kilt and sash, prints the shirt in red and cyan, and adds a navy choker and ribbon earring. His eyes flash gold with visible veins when he fights in earnest, and his build fills out after the International Blader's Cup.

Free pairs a strong work ethic with a lazy, easygoing streak, rarely putting in much effort during Bey battles and usually spinning his Bey by hand rather than drawing his launcher, saving that for tougher opponents. Regarded as the strongest blader in the world before Valt and Lui, he reads a match easily and often looks bored, unimpressed since little challenges him. He dotes on the deer that watches him train, smiles more as the story goes on, and is fit enough to run a hundred sprints or haul a boulder without strain. He can be blunt or sarcastic, careless about punctuality, and walks away from anything unworthy of his time. His loss to Lui and his bout with Shasa Guten mark a shift toward respecting other bladers, and pushing to full power against Valt costs him an injured arm.

Briefing

What to know

  • Started as BC Sol's captain, transferred to the Raging Bulls, then returned to BC Sol and later joined the elite Big Five.
  • Rarely uses his launcher, often hand-spinning Fafnir except against genuinely skilled opponents, signaling seriousness when his eyes glow gold and veins bulge.
  • Held the world's #1 ranking until forfeiting his Episode 50 match against Valt Aoi in Evolution due to a right-arm injury.
  • Long rivalry with Lui Shirosagi, whom he first loses to, then defeats twice, including with his signature move Nothing Break.
  • Evolves his Beyblade across seasons: Drain Fafnir (Evolution), Geist Fafnir (Turbo, destroyed by Phi), Mirage Fafnir (Surge), and Vanish Fafnir (QuadDrive).
  • Inspired young blader Fumiya Kindo (Beyblade Burst Rise) to build his own Fafnir-type Bey after seeing Free's Geist Fafnir on TV, despite the two never meeting.
  • Loses to Legendary Blader Lain Valhalla in New York, a defeat that visibly unsettles his usually carefree demeanor.
  • Frequently accompanied in quiet moments by an unnamed pet-like wild deer near his forest training stadium.
