About This Part

Takara Tomy issued Screw Trident in Japan in December 2017 through the BG-08 Random Layer Collection Vol. 8, a Stamina Type Layer built for the God Layer System. Three large blades form a triangular shape carrying the trident theme of Trishula, the three-pronged spear of Hindu tradition, continuing on from its predecessor Trident; a rubber link joins the centre to the blades to create a shock-absorbing gimmick known as Bound Defense, in the manner of Jerk.

In Play

The rubber is too stiff in practice to flex and absorb shock the way it was designed to, and the triangular outline it sits inside already runs high on recoil and burst risk that the four medium teeth cannot fully offset. Even so, its weight distribution gives it spin times that rival Deep Chaos in pure stamina play, without that part's ability to destabilize a stadium, and the community rates it a strong stand-in for Deep Chaos when that piece is unavailable, and otherwise a welcome pickup.

  • Debuted in Japan in December 2017 with the BG-08 Random Layer Collection Vol. 8.

The Competitive View

As with Jerk and Guardian Kerbeus, the rubber-leg gimmick fails to actually cushion impact in practice, and the hexagonal shape's hook-like segment joints leave it vulnerable to Bursting against both left- and right-spin opponents despite Stamina on par with Deep Chaos.

Verdict as the draft gives it: Screw Trident's shape, weight distribution, and price leave it outclassed in Stamina and Defense by Drain Fafnir, Alter Chronos, and Deep Chaos, which also offer Spin Equalization and destabilization advantages; recommended for collection purposes only.

  • Debuted in BG-08 Random Layer Collection Vol. 8, released December 13, 2017
  • Four teeth of medium height, comparable to Drain Fafnir's
  • Rubber-legged 'Bound Defense' gimmick at the center
  • Weight roughly comparable to Galaxy Zeus
  • Takara Tomy release: BG-08 Random Layer Collection Vol. 8 (yellow and red-orange, translucent orange God Chip)

Related parts named in the draft: Trident, Jerk, Guardian Kerbeus, Drain Fafnir, Alter Chronos, Deep Chaos, Galaxy Zeus.
