About This Part

Modelled on Odin's handmaidens of Norse myth by way of the anime's armoured-knight redesign, Cho-Z Valkyrie carries a forward-facing feathered face and three large wing points, and Takara Tomy debuted it in Japan with the B-127 Starter, Cho-Z Valkyrie Zenith Evolution, on November 17th, 2018, with Hasbro following west as Cho-Z Valtryek. It carries less metal than most Cho-Z-series layers, drawing most of its weight from its size, and its "Cho-Z Awakening System" gimmick raises red sub-wings and a single burst-stopper tab at high spin speed, though only the upper-left wing actually engages the disc.

In Play

The layer's weight and gimmick made it one of the stronger right-spin attack choices at release, on par with Cho-Z Achilles, but the gimmick actually reduces recoil when active and the layer nearly requires the three-pointed Zenith disc to stay effective; it has since become outclassed as the metagame moved to heavier pieces, and the community treats it as a collector's item rather than a tournament staple.

  • Released in Japan in the B-127 Starter, Cho-Z Valkyrie Zenith Evolution, on November 17th, 2018.
  • Released in western countries as Cho-Z Valtryek in Hasbro's Pro Series Starter Pack, Cho-Z Valtryek Blitz-P Jolt.
  • When CoroCoro Comic first revealed the Crimson Knight Ver. in November 2018, its Japanese name, written in Kanji with Katakana furigana, translated as "Crimson Knight," though the product's own sticker sheet simply calls it "Crimson Ver."

The Competitive View

The added weight and inertia are meant to boost knockout and burst-attack potential and improve burst resistance alongside the tall teeth, though the wings sit at a more obtuse angle than predecessors, which can limit recoil unless offset by the extra weight.

  • Metal weighting behind the wings and center
  • Incompatible with a Level Chip, unlike earlier Cho-Z Layers
  • Tall teeth on the Takara Tomy release
  • Anti-burst gimmick extends red sub-wings and a locking tab at high spin velocity
