Description

The scorpion blade of the All Starz' basketball player, whose launches come down like slam dunks. Trypio's tail strikes stab downward at the centre of an opponent's blade, a move that pairs with Eddy's habit of attacking from height. Its main outing is the second match of the American final, a fast exchange with Ray's Driger F, and it is one of the four All Starz blades Black Dranzer strips of their bit-beasts in Kai's Moscow exhibition.

Eddy pilots Trypio throughout the first Beyblade anime, a Defense Type built around the Spin Gear System's Flying Defense Attack Ring, Eight Balance Weight Disk and SG Sharp Base. Its Bit Chip carries Trypio's own image. Takara Tomy issued recoloured versions too, among them a Sunshine Orange edition, a red variant from the 2002 Fukubako lottery box, and a green Hasbro BBA Championship Series release.

Parts in detail

Takara's version of Trypio, built around a working 'flying' launch gimmick; contrasts with Hasbro's release, where the same gimmick was removed (see Trypio (Hasbro)).

SlotPartWeightSpinNote
Attack Ring Flying Defense 6.2 g Right and Left Takara's molding differs substantially from Hasbro's, likely for regulatory reasons around flying-toy gimmicks. Launched upside-down, it generates downforce in Right Spin but destabilizing lift in Left Spin, and its light weight and edge protrusions leave it easy for opponents to knock around.
Weight Disk Eight Heavy 15.3 (regular mold) / 15.5 (indent mold) g A compact heavy disk generally a notch below Ten Heavy in every role it fills, though still a fair pick for compacts, traditional upper attack, and as a backup for weight-based defense or force smash.
Spin Gear Right Spin Gear Shells 1.1 each (shells) + 1.12 (Metal Weight Gear, optional) g Right The original right-spin shell casing, incompatible with Neo cores and thus generally passed over for Neo shells in competitive builds.
Spin Gear Regular SG Core Part 0.61 g The plain, lightweight core that clips the Beyblade together and can double as a ripcord gear on bearing-gyro models. Being nearly the lightest core in the game, it suits stamina builds that don't need a gimmicked spin gear.
Blade Base SG Sharp Base 6.6 g A tall, sharp-tipped spin-gear base whose height and material make it unstable and short-lived against most opponents.

Weights are single copies weighed on their own; a part can vary by a few tenths of a gram.

In play and in the story

Community players who still run Spin Gear era gear rate this as a sturdy, if dated, defensive build, its wide Flying Defense ring and Eight Balance disk favoured for absorbing knockback rather than for spin-stealing offence.

  • Released as part of the original Spin Gear System toyline in the early 2000s
  • A red Fukubako 2002 lottery variant followed
  • Hasbro issued a green version for its BBA Championship Series

Community testing, 2009-03-08 — summarised

The competitive view

Trypio is a plastic-generation Beyblade whose Flying Defence attack ring is notable for a flight gimmick on the Takara mold (removed on the Hasbro mold, which instead became useful against spin-stealing thanks to its now-fully-circular shape).

The Takara Flying Defence's width makes it too large to be thrown out of stadiums like Tornado Balance Type S; the Hasbro mold removed the flying ability and the three attack points, becoming a fully circular ring nearly impossible to steal spin from when paired with a low base.

Verdict as the draft gives it: Called of no competitive use and worth buying only for collectors.

  • Attack Ring: Flying Defence, 7 grams, 8.84cm (3.50 inches) wide on the Takara mold
  • Weight Disk: Eight Balance (see Balance Weight Disks)
  • Blade Base: SG Sharp Base (see SG Sharp)
