Biography
Voltaire Hiwatari is Kai's grandfather, the financier behind Biovolt and the real power above Boris, the Demolition Boys and the whole Abbey. He is a shadow over Kai's life for most of the first season and steps fully into view in Moscow, where the training facility and Black Dranzer are both revealed as his. He brought Kai from Russia to Japan; in the manga he also forced Kai's father to choose between Beyblade and inheriting Hiwatari Enterprises, and the harsh, isolating upbringing that followed is what made Kai what he is. He regards his grandson as an investment rather than family, which is the wound at the centre of Kai's story. His defeat comes from no battle: he watches his instruments choose each other over him, and Mr Dickenson hands him to Interpol.

Beyblade (2001)
Biovolt (head)
For most of the season Voltaire stays out of sight, a name behind Boris and the Abbey rather than someone the Bladebreakers actually meet. Moscow finally puts a face to him: the training facility, Black Dranzer, and the entire Biovolt operation trace straight back to his money and his orders, all aimed at using his own grandson as a weapon. When Tala loses the World final and the Demolition Boys' plot collapses with him, Voltaire has nothing left to hide behind. Mr Dickenson hands him over to Interpol, and he vanishes from the story without ever having to answer to Kai directly.
