Biography

Mariah — Mao Chen in Japan — is second-in-command of the White Tigers and the clan member who takes Ray's leaving hardest, because the two were closest. Her mountain cat Galux, inherited through her Minx Tribe ancestry, is fast and vicious, and she is the first of the Tigers to test the Bladebreakers in Hong Kong. Her Asian Tournament final against Ray is less a grudge match than a conversation; she loses it narrowly, and the two are reconciled with the rest of the clan watching. She returns with White Tiger X in G-Revolution and is among the rivals who rally to Tyson against BEGA. The manga gives her and Ray an ending: they marry, and have a daughter, Lin.

Appearance and personality

What They Look Like, and How They Behave

Feline through and through: gold cat's eyes that narrow when she concentrates, and in the anime hair, clothes and her favourite bandana all in hot pink. The manga draws her differently, with red hair and a blue outfit.

Playful, and sharp when she wants to be. She gets on with other bladers easily, keeps the peace inside the White Tigers as their second-in-command, and carries a rivalry with Emily Watson of the All Starz. In a match she taunts — opponents who write her off get knocked out of position by her speed before they have adjusted. What she settles on, in the end, is that a win does not count for much if the battle was not fun.

Etymology

Where the Name Comes From

Her Japanese name, Mao, is an animal sound, as Gary's and Kevin's are: in her case a cat's meow.

Where the seasons take them

Beyblade (2001)

White Tigers

She's the first of the White Tigers to track the Bladebreakers down in Hong Kong and test what Ray can do outside the village, still stung that he left without her. Their rivalry never curdles the way Lee's does, and their Asian Tournament final plays out less like a grudge match than an old conversation between two people who miss each other — Galux and Driger even stop attacking each other mid-battle while the two bladers remember the years they spent together. She loses by a hair, and the loss is what finally lets her forgive him properly. In Moscow, Black Dranzer catches up with her too, and Kai strips her of Galux along with the rest of her team.

Beyblade G-Revolution (2003)

White Tiger X

Back with White Tiger X, she fights through the tournament's round-robin stage and comes out on top of the battle-royale clash against the PPB All Starz before the team's elimination in the main bracket. When Mystel slips into their training grounds scouting for BEGA, she's one of the first to size up what he's really after, and once Boris's league turns openly hostile she falls in with Tyson, Ray and the rest of the bladers organizing against it without needing to be talked into it.
