About This Part
Coating Spike, also called Coat Sharp and abbreviated CS, is a Performance Tip that Takara Tomy first sold in Japan on April 1, 2010 inside the BB-71 Starter Ray Unicorno D125CS. Physically it is a Spike/Sharp tip wrapped in a rubber coating, so a spinning Beyblade holds a narrow point of contact until it tips off balance, at which point the rubber grips the stadium floor like a Rubber Flat and drives fast, erratic movement. Sonokong and Hasbro produced their own moulds with less sharply defined spikes than Takara Tomy's, giving those copies a more aggressive character once the rubber has worn.
In Play
The community treats Coating Spike as a strong Defense Type choice because its knocked-off-balance behaviour turns into counter-attacking movement, and competitive bladers are advised to keep several copies on hand since the rubber degrades with use.
- Debuted in Japan on April 1, 2010 with the BB-71 Starter Ray Unicorno D125CS.
- Its rubber-over-spike design is considered a forerunner to the Burst Series' Unite tip and its variants, and to the X Series' Merge tip.
