Hard Metal System

Takara-Tomy's fifth Beyblade system launched in August 2003, replacing the Engine Gear System and breaking part compatibility with everything that came before it by folding metal into the Attack Ring and shrinking the whole top to roughly three-quarters of its predecessors' size. That combination pushed rotational speed and both attack and defense power well past the plastic generation, while keeping overall weight close to the older tops despite the smaller frame; the compact build also improved balance and spin retention, trading away only some attack range. Left-hand spin, previously exclusive to Dragoon tops, became available across the whole line once the new Dual Shooter launcher gained the ability to fire from either side. Competitive play initially let the two generations mix, but as newer tops kept arriving, plastic-generation tops fell out of contention and the two eras eventually split into separate competitive pools.
