One of the four core archetypes, this type favours grip and mass over speed, letting a top resist being pushed off its line and sometimes knock an attacker back. Bladers reach for it mainly to counter Attack-style rivals, since Stamina builds spinning faster tend to beat it outright. Across every generation the type has carried the fewest releases of the four, so tournament players see it far less than Attack or Stamina; the World Beyblade Organization's Counter Battle format, where a defensive pick can be chosen specifically against a known Attack opponent, is where it shines. Beyblade X's Xtreme Dash mechanic makes this type harder to run well, since its lighter designated blades, taller ratchets prone to Bursting, and thin cone-shaped bits undercut the tanking role the type is built for.
What to know
One of 4 Beyblade types: Attack, Defense, Stamina, Balance
Takara Tomy and Hasbro labelled sharp tips as Defense in Bakuten Shoot and X, and ball tips as Defense in Metal Fight and Burst, though either tip shape can appear on Defense combos.
The type's colour was yellow in Bakuten Shoot and Metal Fight, then switched to green from Burst onward to match Valkyrie, Spriggan, Ragnaruk and Kerbeus, and in X, Dran, Hells, Wizard and Knight.
During Beyblade Burst's development the type was tentatively called "Defender" before reverting to "Defense" for release.
