Biography

Shu Kurenai is Valt Aoi's childhood best friend, rival, and Beyblade Burst's deuteragonist -- a calm, hardworking prodigy who briefly turns into the ruthless masked villain Red Eye after losses to Free De La Hoya and Lui Shirosagi push him toward the Snake Pit. Wielding first Storm Spryzen and then the corrupting Spryzen Requiem, he's only freed from his Bey's mind control when Valt defeats him in the International Blader's Cup finals. He returns across every later season as a legendary Blader, owner of the Raging Bulls, and mentor to younger Bladers like Fubuki Sumiye and Lain Valhalla.

Appearance and personality

What They Look Like, and How They Behave

Shu is tall for his age, with shaggy white hair and bright crimson eyes, plus a scar over his right eye from an old fight with Lui Shirosagi that stays hidden under his hair until he reveals it after a win. His Burst outfit is a pink shirt with a black-and-red striped tie, a high-collared black vest over white, and a red fingerless glove. As the masked Red Eye in Evolution he hides his face and wears a white sleeveless tailcoat with red accents over a black-and-red bodysuit, his hair grown noticeably longer, until the mask breaks partway through and he eventually cuts his hair back down. Turbo, Surge and QuadDrive each rework that same pink-shirt-and-glove base with different coats, vests and boot colours as the seasons go on.

Hardworking rather than merely gifted, Shu is disciplined enough to become one of the sport's best, beating Valt Aoi to his first WBBA title within a year. Calm, patient and often alone, he keeps a cool front that hides real intensity, and he can seem standoffish or aloof to people he doesn't know well — Valt and Xander Shakadera are exceptions he genuinely opens up to. He's also a capable cook and a sharp observer of others. Losing Storm Spryzen and then a match to Free De La Hoya pushes him toward perfectionism, and as Red Eye within the Snake Pit he turns quiet, ruthless and willing to destroy rivals' Beys, cutting himself off from his friends before eventually finding his way back.

Quotes

In Their Own Words

  • I'm not really a 'club joining' kind of guy.
  • You know he can't hear you, right? This is how Valt is; he loses his cool.
  • You're not doing yourself any favors underestimating Valt.
  • Not cool to smack-talk your own teammates.
  • Hey! We won as a team!
  • We're all bladers here. There's only one way to settle this: with our beys!
  • I think I know my own limits, okay? Don't jump to conclusions!
  • When I win, I realize how much Beyblade has changed my life for the better.
  • (sighs) It was Rantaro.
when the others want Shu to tell them who won the race
  • Don't make me regret letting you in.
