Biography

Kira Hayama is the sadistic, androgynous main antagonist of Beyblade: Shogun Steel, a DNA operative sent with Yoshio Iwayama to scout Neo Battle Bladers. Wielding the stamina-type Berserker Behemoth and later the far more destructive Gladiator Bahamoote, Kira intimidates and toys with opponents, defeating Shinobu Hiryūin, Kite Unabara, and Zyro Kurogane's team in high-stakes Synchrome battles en route to the tournament final, which he loses to Zyro. After Zyro saves his life during Doji's collapsing fortress, Kira turns against DNA, helps defeat Doji's mecha alongside Zyro and Gingka Hagane, and ultimately reconciles with Zyro's group, becoming a genuine friend and tournament rival by series' end.

Appearance and personality

What They Look Like, and How They Behave

Kira has the androgynous look shared by several bladers in his generation, cutting a tall, slender figure with pale skin and golden eyes that peek out from beneath heavy, drooping bangs. A large black eye-patch hides his right eye, doubling as a device that tracks the position of a rival's Bey mid-battle. His hair is a big, spiked mass of light greyish-purple, arranged into roughly five points that read like a crown, with streaks dyed pastel green, pink and aqua, and he wears violet lipstick on his lower lip. His sleeveless navy jumpsuit is trimmed in red, black and gold and cut low enough to show his midriff, with long red gloves tipped in gold orbs standing in for sleeves, a matching belt and hairband, black trousers, and dark grey boots with red panels and gold clasps at the back.

Confidence bordering on menace defines Kira in a fight: he walks in expecting to win, needles his opponents with mockery and unsettling expressions, and shows nothing like doubt even when matched against strong bladers. There is a cruel streak to him too, one that takes real pleasure in the pain he causes, whether that is hurting Shinobu's arm or laughing off the force with which he threw Eight into a wall. His body language and mannerisms carry a distinctly feminine flair, from how he holds his hips to the way he moves his wrists. That harder edge softens once Zyro spares his life a second time; grasping what bey spirit means, Kira turns on his former master Doji, helps take down his robot, and afterwards competes in the world tournament on fair terms with people he once tormented.

Claims We Could Not Check

  • His name and look were inspired by singer Peggy Hayama and wrestler Shawn Michaels ('HBK'), according to writer Takafumi Adachi.
  • Every one of his losses in the series was to Zyro Kurogane.
  • He is the only Zero-G blader to own two separate primary Beyblades across the anime and manga.
  • Kira and Gingka Hagane are the only Zero-G bladers shown using the String Launcher.
  • He is compared to Ryuga and Rago as a dark-powered main antagonist who ultimately took over his own villain organization.
