Upper Attack

This attack style lifts the opposing top off the stadium floor by riding it up a ramp-shaped slope, stripping its defence to nothing the instant it loses contact and leaving it open to a knockout hit while airborne. It rewards a low profile and a high spin velocity, since a taller or faster-spinning opponent is harder to get underneath, and pairs naturally with Inward or Central Weight Distribution for the stability that keeps those speeds up. Destabilizers use a milder version of the same idea from the Balance-type side.

What to know

  • Works best on Plastic- and HMS-era parts; rarer in later generations
  • Plastic-era attack rings noted for it: Upper Dragoon, Triangle Wing, Triple Tiger, Upper Claw
  • HMS-era parts noted for it: Circle Upper, Samurai Upper, Advance Attacker
  • The Vulcan Fusion Wheel's sloped prominences give it Smash Attack rather than true Upper Attack
  • Twin Nemesis' height and elliptical shape can destabilize an opponent's combination and raise its Burst risk
  • The Longinus/Lúinor line, including Rage Ring, Guilty Blade and Zwei Base/Zone Base, is built around it
