Biography

In the manga continuity, Tsubasa Otori is a soft-spoken but devious main protagonist recruited by the Dark Nebula and partnered with Yu Tendo, together forming a duo aimed at eliminating Ginga Hagane's friends. He battles with eyes closed to read opponents purely by sound, wielding Earth Aquila 145WD and his signature Aquila Great Feather Reflection technique. After the Dark Nebula's defeat he and Yu remain in Japan as reformed bladers, but their run in Battle Bladers ends in a tag-team loss to Ginga and Kyouya despite a strong joint Annihilation Attack.

Appearance and personality

What They Look Like, and How They Behave

This version of Tsubasa is tall and lightly muscular, with long, deep-blue hair reaching past his back, bangs hanging over his eyes at the front and sideburns as long as his ears. His eyes have the piercing look of an eagle, and he keeps them shut through most of a battle, opening them only to bore into an opponent's Beyblade spirit at a decisive moment. He wears a long vermilion jacket zipped up to a collar left open at the top, black fingerless gloves, and a belt of blading gear tucked out of sight beneath the jacket and visible only from behind, along with slim-fitting trousers folded over his boots.

Soft-spoken but calculating, this version of Tsubasa relishes unsettling opponents with unconventional tactics nearly as much as he relishes winning outright. He takes real pride in his ability to read a fight by ear, and that same pride tips into arrogance outside the ring, where he considers most people unworthy of his direct gaze. Taking work with Dark Nebula looks sinister on its face, but his aims run narrower: sharpening his own skill and proving how strong he is, rather than pursuing anything genuinely villainous.

Briefing

What to know

  • Manga-only version, portrayed as more openly devious and overconfident than his anime counterpart.
  • Battles with his eyes closed, relying on sound to predict opponents' next moves.
  • Signature technique is Aquila Great Feather Reflection (AGFR), which counters a read opponent attack directly.
  • Shares a joint finisher, Annihilation Attack, with partner Yu Tendo.
  • Loses to Ginga Hagane and Kyouya Tategami in a tag match, eliminating him and Yu from Battle Bladers.
  • Has a gentler relationship with Yu Tendo than in the anime, plus a complicated bond with Reiji Mizuchi as part of the 'Dark Trident.'

Notable battles

  • vs Hikaru Hasama in Chapter 11 — Win
  • vs Ginga Hagane and Kyouya Tategami (tag w/ Yu Tendo) in Chapters 12-13 — Loss

Claims We Could Not Check

  • His manga design gives him closed eyes as a signature trait, unlike the open-eyed anime version.
  • Forms the 'Dark Trident' grouping with Yu Tendo and Reiji Mizuchi per creator Takafumi Idachi's commentary.
