Biography

Ken Midori, known as Kensuke Midorikawa in Japan, channels his crippling shyness through two hand puppets, aggressive Keru and gentle Besu, speaking through them even mid-battle so few people can read his real feelings. A traveling puppeteer's son who never stayed anywhere long enough to make friends, he initially dismisses Valt Aoi as an amateur before becoming one of his closest allies in the Beigoma Academy BeyClub. Across Burst and its sequels he grows steadily more confident, eventually speaking in his own voice, and later mentors younger Bladers like Pri Forsythe while continuing his family's puppeteering career on the side.

Appearance and personality

What They Look Like, and How They Behave

Long spiky black hair and green eyes give Ken a distinctive look, sharpened by a fang that juts from the left corner of his mouth. His coat is green with lighter green accents and a pink chain circle over the chest, worn with darker green trousers, black shoes and a scarf that mixes the same green and pink. Both hands are usually covered by dog-shaped sock puppets: a sharp-toothed, pointy-eared blue one named Keru with a fierce look, and a brown one named Besu with square teeth, longer floppy ears and a gentler, more approachable face. Shu Kurenai tore Besu during Evolution, though the puppet was later repaired.

At first Ken reads as intimidating and eccentric, a mask that falls away to reveal real shyness and a soft voice underneath. Friendliness and support come naturally to him despite that shyness. Because his parents' work kept the family moving, he never stayed at one school long enough to build many friendships, and pressure leaves him visibly nervous. He is a gifted ventriloquist, voicing his two puppets even mid-battle — Keru carries his aggressive, outspoken side and Besu his gentler one, letting him express feelings he otherwise keeps hidden. Over the series he grows more confident, eventually speaking without the puppets at all. By QuadStrike he has taken on something like a mentor role toward younger Bladers, Pri especially, coaching and encouraging them.
