Biography

Ilya Mao is a playful, sharp-tongued BC Sol blader in Beyblade Burst QuadDrive who rejoined the team specifically to challenge Free De La Hoya and Valt Aoi. Strategic and mischievous — she once bet Bel Daizora that the loser of a match would serve as the winner's servant for a day — she carries visible cat-like quirks, from her helmet's cat ears to a habit of hissing mid-battle. Despite being a prominent supporting figure in the anime, her manga presence is limited to a single flashback explaining her earlier departure from BC Sol over Rashad Goodman's harsh training style.

Appearance and personality

What They Look Like, and How They Behave

Average in height, she has pale skin, yellow eyes with light green eyeshadow, and short cerulean hair with two red strands at the front and bangs resting between her eyes. She tucks a white, blue-striped t-shirt into a dark-red jacket padded in crimson at the shoulders and elbows, over rolled-up black shorts lined in white and a white belt with a golden-orange buckle. Navy-blue thigh-high stockings with golden knee-pads lead into dark-red boots panelled in white with roller skates built in, and she wears black fingerless gloves. A red helmet with a white centre, cat-like ears, pale stripes on each cheek, an occasional orange visor and three thin whisker-like lines completes it.

Playful and easygoing on the surface, she is actually sharp and calculating underneath, working hard to get inside an opponent's head before a match even starts. She is outgoing and snarky, with a mischievous streak that once led her to bet Bel Daizora that the loser of their match would serve the winner for a day. Beneath the carefree attitude sits real passion — she joined BC Sol specifically to test herself against Free De La Hoya and Valt Aoi — and a competitive edge that turns her withdrawn and serious for a while after a defeat, as happened following her loss to Lui Shirosagi. Rules mean little to her, shown when she battled Bel even though the cameras weren't rolling and it wasn't allowed. A few cat-like habits round her out, from the cat-ear helmet to hissing mid-battle.

What to know

  • Bet Bel Daizora that whoever lost their battle would serve as the winner's servant for a day.
  • Left BC Sol previously over disagreement with Rashad Goodman's overly harsh training philosophy — shown only in a manga flashback.

  • Cat-themed design quirks include a cat-ear helmet and an in-battle hissing habit.
  • Shares her surname 'Mao' — a nod to a cat's meow — with Mariah's Japanese first name.

Claims We Could Not Check

  • First main female Blader in the Burst series to own a unique Beyblade rather than a generic one; Pri Forsythe follows with Pandoras.
  • Shares a birthday with Akira Yamatoga, the first such pairing between unrelated Burst characters.
  • Design and mannerisms draw on the catgirl anime/manga trope.
