Biography

Hyoma is Gingka Hagane's childhood friend and original rival, appointed guardian of Koma Village to protect it after Dark Nebula's assault on Mt. Hagane. Anime-exclusive and deeply cunning, he tests newcomers Kenta, Madoka, Kyoya, and Benkei by deliberately misleading them before guiding them to the village once they prove trustworthy. He fights with Clay Aries, battling through the Survival Battle and into the Battle Bladers tournament, but is emotionally shattered in a first-round loss to the mysterious Reiji Mizuchi before recovering to support Gingka through the final battles against Ryuga and later Nemesis.

Appearance and personality

What They Look Like, and How They Behave

A tall, slim-built teenager, he has pale skin, bright blue eyes and a shaggy head of light violet hair. Underneath a blue-green jacket with blue straps, left permanently unzipped, he wears a pink v-neck top with an orange collar. Brown fingerless gloves, brown trousers and a pair of brown hiking boots, with the trousers tucked into the boots, round out his look.

Protecting Koma Village is close to an obsession for him, and he has no qualms about lying or manipulating people to keep it safe, as he did while leading Kyoya, Kenta, Benkei and Madoka in circles before deciding they could be trusted. He is a genuinely gifted liar, persuasive enough to keep up an act for as long as it takes. That act often means putting on entirely different personas: he plays deranged to goad Gingka into fighting harder, and acts strange just to unsettle Kenta and Madoka. Underneath the performances he is actually quiet, timid and slow to show real emotion, staying composed through most battles — until his final fight with Reiji Mizuchi leaves him horrified and close to breaking down, before he pulls himself together to help save Yu.

Clay Aries and a cunning mind made him Gingka's first rival, but he beats only Kenta on screen and Reiji leaves him in tears.

What to know

  • Gingka's childhood friend from Koma Village and his original number-one rival, having always beaten him growing up at the Green Hades stadium.
  • Deceives and tests newcomers Kenta, Madoka, Kyoya, and Benkei with false personas before honestly guiding them to Koma Village.
  • Uses Clay Aries ED145B, with special moves Horn Throw Destruction and Wind Storm Assault.
  • Loses to Ryuga's Dark Nebula ally Reiji Mizuchi in the Battle Bladers first round via the Dark Move Venom Strike, which crushes his composure to tears.
  • Later helps Kenta try to rescue Yu Tendo from Ryuga and Doji, losing that fight but saved by Gingka's disguised father, Phoenix.
  • Never battles Ryuga directly across the entire Metal Saga.
  • Anime-exclusive character who suffers repeated losses through Metal Fusion and never reappears as a blader afterward.

Quotes

In Their Own Words

  • Alright, fine then. It seems like the Tournament can't continue anyway.
  • You've seized the stage, but you just don't run the show, got it?
  • A good defense is the best offense.
  • Check it out, this is how Aries battles.
  • Counter-attack Aries, don't lose to a guy like this.
  • Leave me alone! You don't fight to win, you fight to break people.
  • I won't allow a Blader like you to win, do you hear me?! Beyblade isn't something you do in order to break your opponent!
  • I won't let you, I bet my Blader's spirit on it. I'm going to defeat you no matter what.
  • I know I'm supposed to rest, but I'll feel better being there for Gingka.
  • ARIES! NO!!!!

Claims We Could Not Check

  • His name combines 'Hyou' from the mountain Hyouzan and 'Ma' from the demon Mamano.
  • His Beyblade is called Clay Aries in Japan but renamed Rock Aries in the English dub despite an unchanged Clay fusion wheel, to match Hasbro's toy line.
  • Listed as one of Japan's top 20 Bladers despite his losing streak through Metal Fusion.
  • One of the only bladers in Gingka's circle who never battles Ryuga.
